I’m not entirely sure when wood decking slipped into the UK but for years and years paving was the norm and then suddenly everywhere I go I start to beautiful wood decking in UK gardens. The question is how did that come about so quickly?
The British Love Their Patios
It’s absolutely true, everybody knows how much the British love tradition and when it comes to changing how things have been done for many years it a hard task to talk them into something new. A good example is the demise of the garden patio in favor of wood decking.
Wood Decking & The UK Climate
Most people would be under the impression that the UK climate doesn’t present an ideal environment for wood decking. After all, we do have long damp winters and sometimes some long wet summers.
Is spite of the climate reservations we have been seen a huge increase of wood decking being used as a landscaping tool with some excellent results.
My initial thought on the use of wood decking here in the UK was that it was just a trend that would die out in a few years but of course I was entirely wrong as the market has expanded and we now import over 100 different varieties of wood decking into the UK to create wood decking that can survive our climate.
It appears the British have been seduced by the prospect of more time spent in the garden and the timber decking adds a lovely touch. Imagination compiled with some good design can create wonderful raised decks that everybody appreciates.
Wood Decking – What About The Costs?
In most cases wood decking is added to an existing surface and it doesn’t take long to put together a supporting framework for the finished timbers deck.
As for a traditional patio or paving work it is a different kettle of fish altogether. First off you had to break up the existing surface – usually concrete – and then you had to dig about 150mm or so to allow for a little patio foundation.
Add to this the large amount of sand, the laborious task of clearing the site, carrying the heavy slabs in and then the time it took to lay the patio and you begin to get the idea as to why timber decking in the UK has really taken off.
Of course one other important factor is cost. In most cases the actual cost of a timber decking would only come to about half the costs of laying a patio in the same area.
